Compression for Degraded Storage and Transmission
Compandent has developed a method and system that efficiently codes signals, such as speech, audio, and video, over packetized networks or storage media, in less-than-ideal channel condition where bit error, frame erasure or packet loss occurs.
The system can be used for systems such as real-time, streaming or storage media, that uses coding systems to transmit (or store) signals such as speech, audio and video over packetized networks, such as Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) and third, fourth or fifth generation (3G), (4G) (5G) wireless networks, or WiFi, in less-than-ideal channel condition where packet loss or frame erasure occurs. The system can also be used as enhancement layer for existing standard coder in a base layer, such that the invention can be used to enhance the performance of standard coder whenever bit error, packet loss or frame erasure occurs.
The new coding scheme reduces or eliminates the usage of error concealment techniques to generate an approximation of the reconstructed signal. The new coding scheme allows exact reconstruction of the signal in spite of frame erasure. The system can be designed to tolerate different level of frame erasure, and coding delay. The system can also be used as enhancement layer for existing standard coder in a base layer.
